What are your commitments?

November 29, 2016

Well, can you name them?

Where do you choose to invest your time, money, and influence? Quick, let's look at your schedule and financial records. This is an easy litmus test to discern where your commitments reside.

Position bestows commitment. The elected official pledges to care for constituents. The Air Force General dedicates herself to the mission, and safety of personnel and equipment.

Your responsibility to your boss, customers, and co-workers is a daily commitment to quality work and generosity. The Army's elite 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) that guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetary are committed to their work.

President John F. Kennedy noticed a janitor carrying a broom during a tour of the NASA space center. The President introduced himself and said, "Hi, I'm Jack Kennedy, what are you doing?" "Well, Mr. President," the janitor responded, "I'm helping put a man on the moon." The janitor connected the dots between his commitment to his job and getting boots on the moon.

Family obligations as a parent, child, sibling, or functional family members come with an expectation of emotional, financial, and practical care. What does this commitment look like for you today?

NFL coach Vince Lombardi stated, "Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work." Our membership as a citizen of our country bestows rights and privileges but expects a commitment of participation and making your voice heard. Has this commitment waned in recent days or are you emboldened?

What is your commitment to your health and wellbeing? Airline safety guidance is to put on your mask first so that we can help others. Personal status checks during service to others are necessary.

For the last three years, our friend conducts weekly visits to an elderly father to honor the last wishes of her friend. I was amazed to hear of her devotion and sacrifice to follow-through on her promise.

How are you dedicated to maintaining your physical, spiritual, mental, and financial health? How are creativity, fun, and laughter part of this maintenance plan? Let's ensure those around us are fully alive and cared for, and leave the zombies to the big screen.

Engage

These INQUIRIES are here for you.

My intention is for you to ask better questions and think deeper.

Our fast paced, always on, society provides little time for reflection.

After answering the initial inquiry, dig a little deeper and follow-up with a bit more thinking:

What do I think about it?

How can I make it better/worse?

How does this influence my life and those around me?

How can I be more generous?
